Discipleship and fellowship are at the heart of the Christian journey. Traditionally, they bring to mind face-to-face gatherings—small group Bible studies, heartfelt conversations, and the sharing of life’s highs and lows over bottomless cups of coffee.
But sometimes, geography, work commitments, or family responsibilities make that kind of connection difficult. And so, God’s call to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19) must sometimes find new and creative expressions.
For my friend and me, our shared desire to grow in Christ found fertile soil in the world of online daily devotionals. Over the past five years, we’ve discovered the beauty of walking with God—virtually hand in hand.
When my friend first suggested we read a daily devotional together, I was hesitant. Our schedules rarely aligned. I was juggling young children, overwhelmed at work, and living too far away for in-person Bible studies to be realistic.
But with a wide range of online devotional resources available, we’ve been able to choose books that speak deeply to both of our hearts. Each morning—or whenever time allows—we read the same devotional on our devices. Sometimes we make notes individually, often we’ll send a quick text with a favourite quote or a question that struck us.
Through this new rhythm, I’ve experienced the truth of Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Even in digital form, the daily discipline of Scripture, reflection, and mutual encouragement has become a foundation of our friendship.
We choose devotionals rooted in Scripture, and each day brings fresh reminders of God’s promises and challenges. We often talk about how the reading connects with our current struggles or joys. This shared reflection helps us to build each other up—and draw closer to God. When one of us feels weak or discouraged, the other speaks truth and hope, echoing Hebrews 10:24–25: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Though our fellowship takes place online, the connection is real. We celebrate answered prayers, support each other through hard seasons, and hold one another accountable to spiritual goals. The daily devotional has become our meeting place—a digital table set before us each day.
James 5:16 urges us to “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” And through honest conversations—sometimes typed in haste, sometimes sent in the quiet hours of the night—we’ve found healing, comfort, and hope.
Fellowship is not bound by geography; it flourishes wherever hearts are open, and God’s Word is honoured.
Meeting with my friend each day through a daily devotional time has shown me the truth of Matthew 18:20: “Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Even if we’re gathering through the soft glow of a screen in the stillness of morning, He is present.
In this digital age, God is still drawing His people together—sharpening, encouraging, and transforming us for His glory.
