Leaving a Legacy

A Message from Simon

In 2016 the Navigators received a gift from the estate of Libby Hinton. For many years Libby invested her life deeply into the lives of people through her personal encouragement, including my wife Juliet. Gifts from Libby’s estate are now enabling others to do the same. This year two young women working with the Navigators amongst students have received funding from Libby’s gift to the Navigators, one of whom knew Libby. Students and people in their 20s are hearing the Gospel and being discipled as followers of Jesus through Libby’s gift to the Navigators.

You too may wish to include the Navigators in your Will and have a similar legacy. We understand that a Will is a very personal matter, and that it is important to consider any implications carefully. After having made adequate provision for your immediate family, you too may want to leave a charitable gift to the Navigators.

By naming The Navigators of New Zealand Inc. in your Will now, you are helping us to advance the Good News about Jesus into our Nation so that more people come to know Jesus, make Jesus known and help others to do the same.

The Navigators are using Libby’s gift in a way that respects what was important to Libby. Our commitment to you is that the Navigators will consider carefully and prayerfully how to use any gifts given, including yours if you choose to include the Navigators of New Zealand Inc. in your Will.

If you would like to discuss leaving a bequest, gift or donation, or you would like further information, please contact us.

Yours in Christ,

Simon Cayzer
National Director
NZ Navigators

What should a Will include?

With a Will it’s your decision – you decide!

  • Making a Will involves carefully considering all who depend upon you, and how you are going to provide for their needs.
  • Your Will should name an executor or executors. They are the people who will be responsible for seeing that your instructions are carried out as specified in your Will.
  • Your Will should provide for payment of your liabilities such as mortgages, overdrafts and debts – even your funeral expenses.
  • Your Will should make provision for your spouse and any dependents (as well as naming a guardian(s) for your children if they are still young).
  • Your Will may also include a Bequest, Gift, or Donation to be made to specific charitable organisations such as The Navigators of New Zealand.

Whilst this outlines the main requirements of a Will, it should only be used as a guide. The Navigators of New Zealand are not qualified to give legal or financial advice and we would strongly urge you to see a solicitor, or a trustee company when you finally decide to make your Will. They will be able to provide you with professional advice.

What is a Will?

A Will is your opportunity to provide instruction as to how you want your possessions to be administered in the event of your death.

Why do I need a Will?
  • A Will gives you the security of knowing that those who depend upon you will be provided for.
  • A Will may prevent conflict and anxiety amongst family and loved ones.
  • A Will precisely states your instructions and wishes, so your executors/trustees are better equipped to administer your estate the way you intended.
  • A Will is also an opportunity to make a final charitable gift that will continue to bless others, long after you have gone.
If you are about to make your Will…

and you would like to include a gift for The Navigators, the appropriate wording for inclusion in your Will is:

“I give free of all duties to The Navigators of New Zealand (CC11416) the sum of $ ________ * for the general purposes of the society, and I declare that the receipt of the Accountant or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my Trustee(s) for such a gift.”

*Instead of naming a particular amount in dollar terms, you may wish to substitute a percentage or fraction of your estate, or leave the residue of your estate (after making provision for family and other concerns) to The Navigators of New Zealand.

If you already have a Will

and you would like it altered to include a gift for The Navigators, then you can add a ‘codicil’ to your Will. This is a separate statement but still part of your Will.

A ‘codicil’ would read much like this:

This codicil dated____________is an addition to the Will of me (name in full) of (place of residence). Other provisions contained in my Will are confirmed.

I give to The Navigators of New Zealand (CC11416) the sum of $ ________ * for the general purposes of the society.

*Or, as above, you may wish to state a percentage, a fraction or the residue of your estate.

Leaving a legacy of hope
