In Psalm 23, David describes how the Lord is our Shepherd, saying, “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” If you’re like me, as this year comes to a close, you may find yourself feeling tired and worn out. The image of green pastures and still waters sounds so inviting—yet, in the busyness of life, it can feel out of reach. How do we find this kind of rest? How can we experience this renewal amidst the constant demands and responsibilities of daily life?
In Mark 1:35, we see Jesus withdraw from the crowds and their pressing needs to spend time alone with the Father in prayer. This wasn’t a one-time event—throughout the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly modelled the rhythm of retreating to be with the Father and then returning to the work He was called to do.
One practice I’ve found helpful for following Jesus’ example is setting aside extended time to be with the Lord—beyond my regular daily quiet times. Taking this kind of intentional break to get away with God, helps me step out of my usual routines and escape the noise of daily life. It quiets my soul, allowing me to hear more clearly from the Lord through Scripture and prayer. In these unhurried moments, I find myself truly present—with Him and with myself—and I experience the peace and restoration my soul so desperately needs.
This kind of time doesn’t have to look one specific way. It could be a few hours in a park or coffee shop or even several days at a retreat centre. Recently, I spent five hours on a “day away” with God with a good friend in Auckland. We booked a study room at a retreat centre, shared a meal together, and then reflected on what God was showing us on the drive home.
We want to invite you to plan some time like this over the summer. It doesn’t have to be complicated—pick a location, decide whether to go alone or invite a friend or family member, and set it in your calendar. To help you get started, we have included a linked booklet that you can use to guide your time.
Jesus longs to spend unhurried, meaningful time with us, where we can rest in His love and be renewed. If you set aside this time, I can promise you won’t regret it.
