“What helps you to pray regularly?” This was a question someone asked me after a talk recently. How would you answer this question?
My first thought is that praying with others helps me to pray regularly. From praying daily with Juliet to praying weekly with groups of people, praying with others helps me to ‘turn up’ when it comes to prayer. This is especially helpful when I don’t feel like praying.
My second thought is that Scripture helps me to pray, especially prayers and promises in the Bible. God has encouraged me to keep praying promises like Isaiah 44:3-4 that relate to the future. I pray other Bible passages and prayers in response to what God has impressed on me and puts on my heart for others. Currently I am praying Isaiah 33:2 for people, “Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress.” This prayer for others seems relevant in light of the turmoil and uncertainty we are experiencing in the world at present.
My third thought is that behind the scenes God’s Spirit helps us to pray and even prays for us! I, and we, need all of this vital help to pray regularly. Power from God’s Spirit, inspiration from Scripture, and encouragement from others all help us to pray.
