Too Busy

“Life is busy!” we complain. But who are we kidding? This is how we choose to live. If we found a way to be more efficient in our activities so that we saved time, what would we do with that extra time? More activities! We are addicted to doing things. Maybe it’s the false sense of control we get from being so productive. Maybe it just makes us feel more valuable. Whatever it is, it’s spreading us very thin, so that there’s virtually nothing below the surface. But we’re more than just what we do – we are Human BE-ings – and that requires depth.

The Psalmist despairs: ‘In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for [God] grants sleep to those He loves’ (Ps127:2). It’s as if God says, ‘You busy yourselves with more than I ever intended. Even when you should be sleeping you keep working. Enough! Can you not live as intended, and trust me to look after everything else?’ Our answer to that question seems very clear.

So, what are we to do? Less! And let’s trust God for more, as if our lives depended on it. Because they do.
