Some people once came to Jesus and asked him ‘What do we need to do to lead a successful life?’ (Their actual question was ‘What is the greatest commandment?’, but in essence they were asking the same thing).
Jesus told them: ‘Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself.’ In essence, his answer was this: The quality of your relationships – with God, others and self (in that order) – defines a successful life.
In the complexity and busyness of life, amidst the projects and activities and achievements, God would stop and ask me this simple question: What is the quality of your relationships?
Refreshingly simple and frighteningly revealing! If I want to live a successful life, I must confront and be confronted by this question.
